The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential is the highest-regarded professional qualification in breastfeeding knowledge and support, recognised all over the world. Prior to sitting the rigorous exams, candidates are usually already accredited as breastfeeding counsellors, midwives or health visitors and have additional, extensive and advanced training in breastfeeding and lactation issues. To sit the exam, they must also have at least 1,000 hours of proven clinical experience, working with breastfeeding mothers and babies.
IBCLCs must recertify every five years, in order to prove that their skills and knowledge are up to date. In addition, all IBCLCs are also obliged to work according to the IBLCE Code of Professional Conduct.
All of the London Lactation Consultants IBCLCs come from a breastfeeding counsellor background, as defined by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, and carry full professional insurance. We all continue to be accredited breastfeeding counsellors and share many years’ experience of supporting breastfeeding mothers. We have all breastfed our own children and we know what it is to walk in the shoes of a new mother. We too have experienced sleepless nights and crying babies, worries about milk supply, painful feeds and low moments. We’ve all travelled our own journeys, and we all believe passionately that mothers deserve good information and support, as they find their own way to nurture their babies.
